Final mentor log with Casie Ollendick

December 3rd 2007

130-300

Today was Ms. Ollendick and I's last meeting. We discussed my product and presentation. I told her I was doing a presentation and that I planned on using power point. We discussed stage fright and how it made people nervous. She asked me what i ended up doing for my final product and I told her that I made posters. Miss Ollendick gave me her opinion on what should be done on the power point. She told me to explain how to help some one with an eating disorder and not really explain all of the psychological bunk because people respond better to facts and numbers. She also said that if I include the audience that my presentation will be better

The Restoration.

During the Glorious Revolution King James II was thrown out of England. The English parliament no longer held absolute power. This was largely due to the Bill of Rights which may be the most important document in history. James II ended any chance of Catholisism regaining power and there was little toleration for non-conformist protestants.

To me the definition of satire is sarcasm that people use to expose some one or make fun of them. For insance on the Real World Kelly Anne knew that Parisa didn't know how to pronounce a word. So she intentionally had Parisa say the word to make her look bad in front of her boss.

In " A Modern Proposal" Johnathon Swift uses satire to explain the social classes in society. He says things like people shoukld eat there one year olds as to not have so many poor people. Swift uses satire to show the inhumane condition of the colonized Irish. Over all the whole story is satiric.

"Plague of the Year" is A fiction story. It discusses the events that went on during the plague in London. The narrator decided not to leave London like most other people and the story is his account of what happened during the plague. He specifically brings up how there were fake medicines going around as well as fake doctors. The story also discussed how houses had been locked up that were infected. Merchant families went to their boats as to try and not get sick.

The narrator stayed in the city until the end of the plague. Over one hundred thousand people died. The city eventually returned back to normal , and the people of London "slowly returned to their way of life. "

To me it seems that wealth and family heritage were most important to these people during this time period. The wealthier the person the more they are respected and the more valuable you are to society. "These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants: who as they grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes." This quote proves that it is important to the people during this time to make money and that if you are unclassy you are looked down upon.

Mentor Log with Casie Ollendick

October 2nd 2007 3:00-4:45
Ms. Casie and I met for the first time and discussed what my project was about. I told her that I was researching the eating disorders bulimia and anorexia. Ms. Olledick told me that she could help me and that she knew about eating disorders through a student at the school she used to work at. Ms. Ollednick and I also reviewed pieces of my research paper. She was very helpful in telling me what I could do to enhance it as far as gramatics. She kept the paper so that she could more thoroughly look over it by herself.

Ms. Ollendick and i reviewed some papers that were sent to me from The Renfrew Center for Eating Disorders. These papers included pamphlets as well as handouts. I think we equally informed eachother on what we knew about eating disorders and taught eachother a lot.

October 3rd 2007 3:15-4:30
Today Miss Ollendick gave me back my research paper. We went over my final draft. She had even more things to edit for me to edit by tomorrow when is due. Ms. Ollendick e- mailed some people for me and tried to get more help. We discussed the differences between people who have eating disorders and people who are attention seekers. The difference is that people with eating disorders are typically a lot more secretive than those with out eating disorders. People who are seeking attention are usually the ones who are out there bragging about it and are loud about asking for help. Another thing we discussed is how people teaser people with eating disorders. We discussed how it makes it worse and that all of the abuse from teasing makes the symptoms of the eating disorder worse. Teasing can increase some with an eating disorders desire to purge and not eat. Miss Casie and I also discussed how the media affected women’s desire to be this and we both agreed that it is not about the media. These disorders were much deeper and it is a disease. You can’t catch a disease from the T.V or from magazines.

October 10th 2007 3:15-5:15
Today Ms. Casie and I discussed one of her students that suffered from an eating disorder. She explained to me a lot of what a counselor does in the situation of a student coming forward with an eating disorder. She explained she would follow a few basic guidelines.
1. She would contact the parents
2. Give the parents some numbers to contact for help
3. Inform the teachers and faculty of the disorder.

The reason she would contact the parents is so that they are aware of the problem if they were not already. She also would contact them so that they can provide support to their child. Next she would give the student/parents some contact numbers to provide help for the child. This is so that the parents will know how to get started helping their child. Finally, she would inform the teachers and faculty so they can monitor the student. When a student has an eating disorder they are constantly being watched and their food intake is being monitored as well as their trips to the bathroom.

The student that Ms. Ollendick had was severely bulimic. The teachers had to escort her to the bathroom. She also was very promiscuous. (Students with bulimia are 25 percent more likely to have get an S.T.D than a non-bulimic) This girl was constantly being teased and had no self-confidence. Over all this meeting was very beneficial because I could see what like with an eating disorder was like for someone.

October 17th 2007 3:15-5:00
Miss Ollendick and I discussed my final project today. We talked about what my final project is going to be and how I was going to do it. Miss Casie told me asked me how I was going to do it. I told her I was filming a documentary and she told me that I had a good start. She asked me if she could do anything more to help. I asked her if she could play the mother in my documentary and I said yes. Miss Casie and I talked about what I was going to do for my script. We agreed that if I added more counselors and people who supported the bulimic girl that is would make the story a lot stronger.

Today we talked about the girl who had an eating disorder more. She told me that the girl had not really gotten help and that she didn’t want help. This is common in people with eating disorders because they think of the disease as a friend. Ms. Ollendick told me that she didn’t really know that much about eating disorders and had gotten some replies from people that she had asked earlier for help. Both people were busy but hopefully they will be available soon.

Thursday November 15th 10-12
Casie Ollendick and I met for our final meeting today. We discussed my final project. We also recapped the things we had already talked about in the past. We discussed how dieting can go out of control. As well as how girls who do ballet and gymnastics are at a higher risk of contracting an S.T.D. We talked about how the girls feel dizzzy and pass out.

Finally, we discussed how to heal. This includes but is not limited to creative arts therapy and nutrition therapy. Multifamily therapy is also helpful. We decided that Multifamily theraphy would be most helpful because you have the most support. Miss Casie and I came to learn a lot in our time together and both learned a lot from eachother.

November 26 130-315
Miss Ollendick and i discusses why people had eating disorders. Stress was a main factor. Some others included pressure and anxiety. When people are lonely they also tend to have eating disorders. When a family member has an eating disorder then other people in the family are more likely to have an eating disorder. Drug addicts are also more likely to have eating disorders because of their desire to control things.

Miss Ollendick also told us that when a child feels a loss of control that they become anorectic or bulimic. We also discussed the differences in Bulimia and Anorexia. Bulimics tend to use laxatives and binge than an anorexic. Both pople tend to cut themselves and addicts.

Act Four Macbeth

In Act four Macbeth's fate is licked and sealed. In scene one the witches dance and chant around a cauldron. They inform Macbeth that no one born of a mother's womb will be able to kill him. They also tell him until Burnam Wood reaches the castle he will live. The witches also told him that Macduffs children are going to take over the throne eventually. This upsets him but Macbeth is confident and happy that he won't be killed for a while. In scene two Lady Macduff's relative, Ross comes in. He tells her that the reason her husband went to England is valid. She is still upset and feels that her and her children are vulberable and that he should be home. Ross leaves and the murderers enter. The murderer kills the Macduff's child. In scene three Macduff arrives home to find that his son has been killed. He pledges revenge on Macbeth and intends on killing him.

Act four of Macbeth is alright. I felt that it was a little predictable but the whole entire play is. the best part of this act is when the witches have Macbeth thinking he has a long time left to live when in reality he does not have very much longer.

Act 3: The Tradegy Of Macbeth

In Act 3 of Macbeth many things occur. First, in scene one Banquo starts to suspect Macbeth of killing King Duncan. King Macbeth decides to have a banquet in honor of himself. Banquo says he and his son Fleance will be out horse back riding and will be late arriving. Macbeth hires murderers to go out and kill Banquo and Fleance so that their family won't take over the throne. He convinces the murderers that Banquo is their nemises and they agree to kill him. In scene two Macbeth does not tell Lady Macbeth that he has hired someone to kill Banquo, but does let her know he has done something bad. In scene three there are three murderers who literally hunt for Fleance and Banquo in the woods. In the woods they find Banquo and Fleance and the murderers stab Banquo. Fleance gets away and rides into the darkness. He plans on getting revenge on Macbeth. In scene four the guests arrive at the banquet. Just as the guests begin to sit down one of the murderers appears. He calls Macbeth over and lets him know that Fleance escaped. Macbeth gets very upset and starts to hallucinate. He thinks that Banquo is sitting in his chair and flips out. He begins to scream and shout. Eventually he calms down but all of a sudden he flips out again. Lady Macbeth makes everyone leave and tells him that he just has poor health. In scene five Macbeth goes to see the three weird sisters and the queen of them. Macbeth becomes overly confident and believes that he is not going to be killed in a long time. . In the final scene, scene six, Lennox and another Lord discuss what crimes they think Macbeth is behind. They plan to over throw him from being King.

I personally liked Act 3. I is filled with drama and chaos. It also makes Macbeth look like the fool which he is. In this act you can tell his death is inevitable. He is going crazy and is having people murdered. I believe this act is the best of the entire play because of all of the excitement. The best part is when King Macbeth throws a fit in front of all the guests and basically gives himself away as being a murderer.

.:*Act one Macbeth*:.

In Act one of Macbeth you are introduced to the characters as well as the theme of the story. Macbeth and McDuff run into some witches. The witches inform Macbeth that he is going to become King and McDuff that his children are going to become kings. At first neither of them believe the witches but some of her other predictions begin to come true. Soon the current King, King Duncan decides to visit Macbeth to honor him for becoming thane of Cawdor. Lady Macbeth tries to coax Macbeth into killing the King so they can become royalties. Macbeth is not sure whether or not he wants to kill the King because he knows that inevitably he will become King.

I think Macbeth is letting his wife have too much control over his decision about killing the King. In act 1 you realize that Macbeth does have a conscience. He doesn’t really want to kill the King although he knows if he doesn’t it will take him longer to become King. Act one is really an introduction to all of the characters and the setting.

.:*Act 2 Macbeth*:.

Act two of Macbeth includes the rising action of the story. In this act Macbeth debates whether or not to kill King Duncan. Lady Macbeth tells him that he needs to just bite the bullet and kill him. Macbeth ends up killing the King. He feels very guilty about it. Lady Macbeth tells him basically to get over it and get rid of the evidence. The next moning King Duncan's sons decided to leave the country so they do not get blaimed for the death of their father.

I thought that Macbeth had no backbone. He was not strong enough to resist the temptation that his wife throws in front of him. Macbeth let someone else think for him and ended up killing the King even though he did not have to so that he could become the King. This act i thought was well written. It was easiar to understand than the first act. There was also more drama and it kept leaving you hanginmg. Was Macbeth really going to kill the King, or not?

Over all the theme has been concurrent with what is foul is fair and what is fair is foul. Although everyone think that Lady Macbeth is a sweet, kind, gentle woman she is actually evil and behind the plot of the murder of the King. Macbeth also seems at first to be innocent and other people are considered to maybe be guilty.

Sonnets- I'm a Poet And I Didn't Even Know It

Between Shakespeare and Spencer, Spencer has a better rhyme scheme.The ABABBCBCDCDCEE pattern was better because it flows together more smoothly. Shakespeare's poems sounded good but were more choppy. If you took individual verses out of Shakespeare that it would sound equally as good as Spencer's because it would sound like an AB rhyme scheme. Over all, both sonnets have verses in the form of quatrains. They also both rhyme and are both about love.

Shakespears 18th Sonnet and Edmunds 30th Sonnet are exactly the same as far as their pattern in quatrains. The

Friend please listen;
You are breaking my heart
Your empty words and broken promises are tearing my apart
Instead of your trust, i just have your problems to cart
I am not to blame for you causing this division
I told you I'd be there from the very start
But when I have a problem you just seem to dart
You are not the person I inviosioned

The decision lies in you
If you want to change
You have my support
Don't be estrange
The ball is in your court

My poem follows a Petrachan form. It has an ABBAABBA CDECDE rhyme scheme. This pattern is what Edmund and Shakespeare base there sonnets on. This rhyme scheme involves fourteen lines, an octet and a sestet.

Reminiscing about the Renaissance

The article posted about the Renaissance discusses how people’s theories on life, philosophy, religion and art all changed. This happened when King Henry VIII separated from the Catholic Church. The printing press also contributed to the Renaissance because people began to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. When this occurred, the Popes influence was reduced. The people had found out the Catholic Church was corrupt.

During the Renaissance there was a lot of turmoil in the English Royal Family. When King Henry died his son took the throne and died very young. His sister Mary, or Bloody Mary, took the throne. Mary killed many Protestants by burning them and having them executed. Next Elizabeth became Queen and followed by her was King James. King James is responsible for the King James Version of the Bible.

Reading log

So lately i have been reading a lot. I completed Dear John, by Nicholas Sparks, and it was the best book I have ever read. I cried my eyes out for like an hour! It was actually pretty embarrassing because i was in the car with my family sobbing. But anyway it was amazing. It was a love story about this guy who lived at the beach and met a girl named Savannah. She was a very "good" girl and he was kind of an immature jerk, especially torwards his father who had Asburgers. Anyway they fell in love and ended up not being together because he joined the Army and she fell in love with another man. The whole story was really depressing but i still loved it. I think it was so great because i felt like i was in the story watching the two fall in love. I just felt like i was in the relationship. It was a really good book and I would reccomend it to anyone and everyone to read.
I just finshed reading Go Ask Alice for the millionth time. That book is so good because i feel like everyone can relate to her story in some way. Alice starts her journal when she is about fourteen and finishes it when she is sixteen. Her life is very complicated and she deals with a lot of issues with family, school, drugs, sex and friends. All of these things are on teenagers shoulders which makes this book more powerful. Each time I read the book my opinions change. The first time I read the book I think i was in seventh grade and i felt that the girl was just a loser who needed to learn to deal with life. But this last time i read it i could totally understand where she was coming from. Some times all of the pressure just builds up and you end up making bad decisions. I think that this book is meant for a 14-16 year old audience but to understand it you need to be a little more mature and understanding about the real pressure of life and what high school is really about.
I just started reading a book called The Notebook Girls, I know it sounds lame but its a really good book. Its a collection of real letters that girls in New York City wrote to eachother. I just started reading it today but i'm really enjoying it. The girls are very sarcastic with eachother and kind of mean at some times. For instance at one point one of the girls was upset because she didn't make the hip hop team and one of her friends responded with " Julia, it's okay if you suck at everything or you're just okay. Not everyone can be a winner." Haha, i thought it was funny because it really is true, just kind of harsh.

Getting Medieval

The Middle Ages was a lond period of time between the 5th century and the 16th century. It is also known as the "Dark Ages" . The Middle Ages was a time of Feudalism and peasantry. Many important events happened during this lengthy time period such as The Crusades, The Murder of Thomas a Becket, The Magna Carta, and The Black Death. Each of these contributed to life during the Dark Ages.
The word Crusade meant "a war of the cross". During the middle ages Pope Urban wanted the Christians to retake Jerusalem from the Muslims. This was so they could have the land of christ back. So the French German, and Italians were the christian Europeans who would go on crusades to try and get there land back from the Muslims. The first cusade was a bust there was no strategy and many men died from hunger and disease. When they finally reached Jerusalem the Europeans killed who ever they saw. Knights would go on Crusades to get rich or to steal a houses from the people they were fighting, but most of the knights went to get healed of their sins. In this time period the Catholics were in control and would bribe men to become knights by saying that they would not go to hell if they would fight. All together there were six crusades. One thing that happened due to the crusades was new religious order. People who were previously Knights often became monks at the church. The Knights did capture Jerusalem for a short period of time but it kept getting retaken by the Muslims. Many innocent muslims as well as Knights were killed during this time.
Thomas Becket died December 29th, 1170. Thomas A Becket's murder was due to King Henry II. King Henry believed that by having Becket at the a top position of the Church, he could easily impose his will upon this powerful religious institution, he was very wrong. Becket's allegiance switched from the court to the Church making him take a stand against his king. During this time period the Church had the right to try felonious clerics in their own religious courts of justice and not those of the crown. Henry wanted to get rid of this law by getting rid of Beckett. After Becket left for 6 years he came back to Cantebury. On Christmas nigh of 1170 he was doing a sermon. In the sermon he said ’May they all be damned by Jesus Christ!’ about the bishops. This made the king furious and the sing later said “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest!” So 4 Knights took this literally and went out for the kill of Becket. The men found him at the altar of the Cantebury Cathedral. One of the Knights went up to him. He struck Becket on the shoulder with the flat part of his sword. The knights did not plan to kill Becket, but as he stood firm after the first blow, the four attacked and butchered him. King Henry II was very upset when he heard what had happened to hid friend. He starved him self and wore sackcloth and ashes for three days.
The Magna Carta was issued in the year 1215. It was written due to a disagreement between the pope, King John, and the barons because there was confusion about the King's rights. The Magna carta limited the Kings rights over his people and allowed them more freedom. The Magna Carta was one of the earliest documents to limit the Kings power. This document would help to later inspire the Bill of Rights and the constitution in America.
The Black death plagued Europe in the late 1340's. One third of the people in Europe died. Twenty million Europeans died. The cause of the Black Plague was the Oriental Rat Flea from black rats. What happened was the flea would bite the rat that had bacteria in its blood. Next the Bacteria would multiply in the fleas stomach. After that the fleas stomach would be clogged with bacteria and to release it the flea would bite a human and regurgitate the bacteria into the human. The Black plague caused the Catholic church as well as people's social ranking to change.
The Cantebury Tails Prologue includes a variety of characters. Their are thirteen main charactors in the story each of them posess many identifiable characteristics.

The Knight was a charming gentleman. This is proven in the story when it says "A knyte ther was and that a worthy man,

That fro the thyme that he first bigan

riden out, he loved chivalrie,

Touthe and honour, freedom and curteisie.

The story also posesses a squire. He was very happy and flirty. The story demonstrates this when it says, " In hope to win thereby his lady's grace.
Embroidered he was, as if he were a meadow bright,
All full of fresh-cut flowers red and white.
Singing he was, or whistling, all the day.

There was also a Yeoman. The Yeoman was known as a woodsman who resembled Robin Hood but people weren't sure if he was quite as true as Robin was.
A Christopher medal on his breast of silver sheen.
He bore a horn, the baldric all of green;
A forester he truly was, I guess.

The Prioress was very lady like and compassionate.
That she would weep if she but saw a mouse
Caught in a trap, whether it were dead or bled.
She had some little dogs, that she fed
On roasted flesh, or milk and fine white bread.
But sorely she wept if one of them were dead.

The Monk was wealthy and frugal.
Greyhounds he had, as fast as a bird in flight.
Since riding and the hunting of the hare
Were all his love, for no cost would he spare.
I saw his sleeves were made with fur at the hand
With fine grey fur, the finest in the land

The Merchant was decietful he seemed almost like a perfect cars salesman.
This worthy man kept all his wits well set;
There was no person that knew he was in debt,
So well he managed all his trade affairs
With bargains and with borrowings and with shares.

The Clerk studied a lot and was very interested in learning.
He took utmost care and heed for his study.
Not one word spoke he more than was necessary.

The Sergeant of the Law was widely respected and knowledgable about laws.
Because of his knowledge and high reputation,
He took large fees, had robes more than one.

The Franklin loved to indulge himself with food and wine and other pleasures.
His house was never short of food and pies
Of fish and flesh, and these in large supplies
It seemed to snow therein both food and drink
Of every dainty that a man could think.

The cook was there to do just that, cook. His specialty was a Blanc-mange which i a custard like dessert.
A COOK they had with them, just for once,
To boil the chickens with the marrow-bones,

There was a sailor who knoew the water very well.
He knew well all the havens, how they were, From Gottland to the Cape of Finisterre,
And every creek in Brittany and Spain;
His vessel had been called the Madeleine.

There was a doctor who was very highly reguarded was also very cheap with his money. He cared for and saved a patient many times...
And yet he was right careful of expense;
He kept the gold he gained from pestilence.

The Wife of Bath was respected and lived a morally questionable lifestyle.
She'd been respectable throughout her life,
Married in church, husbands she had five,Not counting other company in youth.

The Parson who was into religion.
But rich he was in holy thought and work.
He was a learned man also, a clerk,
Who Christ's own gospel truly sought to preach;
Devoutly his parishioners would he teach.

The Plowman was a very hard worker with a good heart.
He loved God most, and that with his whole heart
At all times, whether it was easy or hard

There was also a Miller. The Miller was strong and won contests.
Hardy, big of brawn and big of bone;
Which was well proved, for wherever a festive day
At wrestling, he always took the prize away.

The manciple was involved in the market and did well in them.
That he knew the markets, watched them closely,
And found himself ahead, he did quit nicely.

The Reeve was known to look like a puppet.
Who shaved his beard as close as ever he can.
His hair was closely cropped around his ears;
His head, the top was cut alike a pulpiteer's.
Long were his legs, and they were very lean,
And like a staff, with no calf to be seen.

The Summoner was a good friend and a good drinker.
A better comrade would be hard to find.
Why, he would suffer, for a quart of wine.

The pardoner was an excellent singer.
He was, in church, a fine ecclesiast.
Well could he read a lesson or a story,
But best of all he sang an offertory;
For he knew well that when that song was sung,
Then must he preach, and all with smoothened tongue.

I read The Knight's Tale. The story is a collection of vulgarity. William Thatcher is a peasant. He is sent to apprentice with a knight named Hector when he was very young. His father told him to "change his Stars" he assumes Sir Hector's place in a tournament when Hector dies in the middle of it. He wins. With the other apprentices, he trains and assumes the title of Sir Ulrich Von Lichtenstein. By law, only Knights may compete. Being of plain birth, William aquires fake documents to support his new identity. At his first tournament, he meets the lovely Jocelyn who is a Lady and has no clue that William wasn't noble. He also creates an enemy in Count Ademar, until then the best Knight in the games would compete for Jocelyn. William goes on and wins many tournaments and Jocelyn's love. Ademar finds out William's came from a peasant family and turns him in. William is immediately arrested. The Black Prince Edward, who William had paid a past kindness to, makes William an official Knight of the Realm, which makes him allowed for him to compete. He beats Ademar, and he and Jocelyn celebrate.

This story represents maby things about the midevil ages. For instance the fact that there were rigid social classes. This is demonstrated when William's has to get false papers to compete in tournaments. Another thing that is demonstrated in this story that also occured the middle ages were having tournaments to fight over girls. In the middle ages the girl had to date who ever it was that won. Finally, the fact that they had tournaments in front of large crowds shows that things were very different in the middle ages than they are now.

Beowulf

The story of Beowulf is very inspiring. The themes used for this story are still relevant I enjoyed hearing how Beowulf was going to defeat his nemeses. Although the story had many positive aspects there were also some negative parts as well. Beowulf was an honest, courageous man. I thought his character was someone to admire. In the story Beowulf says he will not use any weapons to fight his nemeses. I found it exciting to see how he was going to beat these terrible enemies. "I do not consider myself a lesser fighter than Grendel does himself; therefore I will not kill him with a sword, and deprive him of life in that way No: this night we two will abstain from swords..." Another part of the story that I found to be interesting is the historical background because this story is so old. Even though the story has aged it is still relatable. The theme of the story is courage. I think this is very important because Beowulf becomes King. I think Beowulf's courage along with the fact that he believed in himself were what made him a successful leader. My favorite part of the story is when Beowulf is having a ceremony in his honor. To me this part was good because everyone seemed so joyful and proud of Beowulf. Beowulf was boasting about all of his marvelous achievement. It did not seem like bragging. This is because he had a lot to be proud of. On the other hand there were parts of the story I did not like. Beowulf was written a very long time ago, which makes it hard to understand. The language during that time period was very different and I also did not like the way all of the character names sounded so similar such as Hrothgar, Hygelac, and Hrothulf. My least favorite part of the book is when they take a severed arm off of Grendel and hung it on the wall. I thought that was gross. I thought the story was more about helping people. Not about having trophies of violence. Over all I thought the story had a good message. The main character was strong and dignified. I also felt that the heroism in the story was inspiring. I would recommend this story to an older audience because I think it is at an advanced reading level.
Beowulf relates to the Anglo-Saxon lifestyle in many ways. Having a prestigious family was very important during the Anglo Saxon time period. In the Anglo-Saxon’s culture the attributes of a hero were to be bold, strong, fearless, loyal and displaying no pain. Beowulf’s faith and confidence in him as a warrior in the society are other important factors in Beowulf’s heroism. Beowulf demonstrated how bold he was. When he fights the dragon and Grendel and Grendel's mother with out thinking twice. He was bold by doing this because he was especially old when he fought the dragon. Beowulf fought to the death and fought for his people.
Beowulf was also loyal. He fought for his people and was their King. He fought for them fearlessly. Anybody who would fight until their death for their people is very loyal. Beowulf was also a hero. People looked up to him and celebrated him. People looked up to his wealth and were joyous towards his victories. Proving his loyalty, he gave the dragon’s treasure to the people of Herot so that his memory will still be there after he died.
Beowulf's death was very heroic. He died fighting for his people, which was very noble. His people respected him due to the fact in which he would do anything do defend them.
Beowulf did relate to our modern day super heroes. He closely resembled superman. This is because of how powerful and well known they both were/are to there time periods. Both "super heroes" helped to save the people and everyone loved them.
Beowulf did not relate in some ways. The way that he was so boastful towards his victories is unlike our modern super heroes. For instance when he was at his ceremony dinner he bragged about all of his victories the entire night. Also Beowulf started out successful he never really went through any times of being poor, have any weird science go wrong on him like current heroes such as Spiderman or Clef the Boy Chin Wonder. He also gave his glory to God which a lot of modern super heroes do not.
Beowulf's death was very heroic. He killed a dragon but ended up being killed himself. He died saving his people, which is quite respectable. Beowulf's heroism is demonstrated when he takes 14 of the bravest in his land to go help Hrothgar. He could have lost all of these men but instead he chose to so the brave thing and do what he had promised.
Over all, I felt Beowulf was a powerful man. He made many contributions to his people and to society. His death struck people terribly. Although I believe even though it was courageous Beowulf was showing off a little bit by trying to beat such a powerful creature when he was so old! "Let me live in greatness...and courage," he says, "or here in this hall welcome...my death."
